Program Overview

The Bachelor of Computer Information Systems program blends theory and practice to prepare its graduates for successful careers in fields such as software systems development, e-commerce, computer system administration, and network administration. The program focuses on the application of information technology to facilitate the management and operation of organizations. In addition to general education courses required of all undergraduates, the CIS major concentrates on computing and network technology, business ethics, business finance, quantitative analysis, statistical analysis, strategic management, and the organization context in which these technologies are employed to solve business problems. As with our other programs, there is a strong emphasis on Biblical values and Theological education, as well as General Education. Courses in the Business major will be taught through the lenses of Christian principles.

Program Learning Outcomes:

Upon the completion of the Bachelor of Computer Information Systems (BCIS) degree program at Sierra States University, the student will be able to demonstrate the following competencies:

  1. Apply knowledge of information systems and business management technologies to a business environment
  2. Design, implement and test a business solution through the application of information technology
  3. Demonstrate an awareness of emerging technologies, and effective oral, written communication skills in business and technical settings
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of how technology integrates with other disciplines, including but not limited to science, management, communications and marketing
  5. Integrate the knowledge acquired in the program within a life of Christian service to the local and global community.

 

Admissions Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered for admission to the

Bachelor of Computer Information Systems program, submitting proper documentation to the office of admission by the appropriate deadline:

  1. Applicants for admission must be in possession of, or have candidacy for, a high school diploma or GED, and must submit official transcripts and/or copy of diploma for their high school degree, as well as any college level work they have completed, if applicable.
  2. A completed application form for admission
  3. Students whose native language is not English must meet the language proficiency requirements delineated elsewhere in the catalog.

  5. A Recommendation Form

 

Unit Transfer Policy

A maximum of eighty (80) semester units may be transferred into the program from a nationally or regionally-accredited college or university. The acceptance of credit hours is at the discretion of Sierra States University, depending upon the academic rigor of the prior course experience.

 

Bachelor of Computer Information Systems Graduation Requirements

  1. Student must complete 68 course units of General Education courses, 20 units of Bible and Theology courses, and 92 units of Computer Information Systems courses.
  2. Students must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or above.
  3. Students must complete the final project course, CIS 960 Field Education, CIS 999 Final Project.
  4. Students must settle all financial obligations to Sierra States University.
  5. Students must file all necessary graduation forms.

Bachelor of Computer Information System Core Course Descriptions

ACC 201 Principles of Accounting I (4 Units)

Introduces the basic concepts of the complete accounting cycle and provides the student with the necessary skills to maintain a set of books for a sole proprietorship. Topics include accounting vocabulary and concepts, the accounting cycle and accounting for a personal service business, the accounting cycle and accounting for a merchandising enterprise, and cash control. Laboratory work demonstrates theory presented in class.  Prerequisite: None

 

ACC 102 Principles of Accounting II (4 Units)

This course covers a substantial portion of the U.S. accounting standards known as G.A.A.P. (generally accepted accounting principles). In particular, it entails a detailed study of the principal financial statements, accounting concepts, revenue and expense recognition, accounting for cash, receivables, and inventories.  Prerequisite: ACC 101 Principles of Accounting I.

 

CIS 101 Introduction to Computer Information Systems (4 Units)

Introduces contemporary information systems concepts. Focuses on business processes, software, hardware, data, and communication technologies, and how these components can be integrated and managed to create competitive business advantages. Hands-on experience with SAP ERP software.

 

CIS 110 Operating Systems (4 Units)

This course provides a theoretical introduction and hands-on experiential learning of today’s operating systems used in personal computers and servers. The course explores Windows, Unix, Linux and tools used by administrators and users in managing these systems. Included is instruction for configuring, implementing and managing network and internet resources and services. Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 115 Ethics in Information Systems (4 Units)

Focuses on ethical problems that arise in the Information Technology world. Covers the areas of IT crime, privacy, intellectual property, software development and employer/employee issues. Introduces the codes of ethics for various IT professional associations and organizations.

CIS 120 Discrete Structure (4 Units)

Explores the mathematical elements of computer science, including propositional logic, predicate logic, sets, functions and relations, combinatorics, mathematical induction, recursion, algorithms, matrices, graphs, trees, and Boolean logic. Attention will be given to the direct applications to computer science. Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 210 Computer Programing I (4 Units)

Intensive introduction to computer science, problem solving decomposition, and algorithm development. Writing, debugging, and analyzing computer programs using high-level programming language. Topics include decision structures, loops, files, methods, classes, arrays and lists. Prerequisite: None.

 

CIS 215 Web Programming I (4 Units)
Studies website development, emphasizing Web-based programming using open source software including Apache Server, PHP, Linux, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript and DHTML, MySQL, and others. Included are the concepts, principles, procedures, methods, tools, and techniques used in the development and management of Internet websites. This includes the design, construction, implementation, testing, and maintenance of complex websites using cutting-edge tools. Sites are developed on the Linux platform. Each student makes assigned presentations, develops small Web projects, serves on a development team, and implements part of one major term project.  Prerequisite: None.

CIS 250 Computer Programing II (4 Units)

Continues the development of a disciplined approach to problem solving and algorithm development using advanced topics of high-level programming language. Topics include details on classes and object, inheritance, exceptions, GUI applications, and recursion. Sorting and searching algorithms are introduced. Prerequisite: CIS 210

 

CIS 260 Mobile Programing I (4 Units)

This course involves a careful examination of mobile device programming. Emphases are on developing applications as a community that run on the Android platform. Students planning to enroll in this course should have background in computer science and be familiar with Java, XML, and unix. This course will also give students insight to today’s common procedures for getting their mobile application work academically published. Prerequisite: None

 

MGMT 1410 International Management (4 units)

A study of the accelerating internationalization of all business, this course introduces upper-division undergraduate students to all facets of international business within three broad subject areas: (1) the economic framework of international business, (2) the operating frameworks of multinational corporations, and (3) a framework for global strategic management. It uses case studies to illustrate concepts and methods. Prerequisite: None

Data communications standards, protocols, models, architectures, internet topics, and ethics. Components of industry infrastructure with business justification. Study of emerging technologies and trends related to software/hardware components. Prerequisite: None.

CIS 315 Fundamentals of Network Administration (4 Units)

Provides an introduction to the three key network management issues: cost analysis, security, and administration. Case studies and laboratory exercises supplement the lecture material. Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 320 Cloud Environment for Enterprise (4 Units)

Studies critical cloud topics such as cloud service models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS); virtualization and how it relates to the cloud; elastic computing; cloud storage; cloud networking; cloud databases; cloud security; and architecting, developing, and deploying apps in the cloud. Prerequisite: None

This course emphasizes the use of database management software packages to access, manipulate, and create data files. Topics include data entry, data access, data manipulation, relational databases, database creation, and file documentation.  Prerequisite: None

 

BUS 2120 Spreadsheet Fundamentals (4 units)

The course instructs students how to use electronic spreadsheet software in business applications. Students become proficient in creating and modifying spreadsheets in a business environment and in printing files that meet business standards. Topics include: spreadsheet concepts, data entry and modification, data analysis, analysis of charts and graphs, formatting data and content, and managing workbooks.  Prerequisite: None

 

BUS 2126 Webpage Design and Development (4 units)

This class offers a high-level overview of the infinite possibilities available to creatives who seek to use the web as their medium of choice. Discussions, readings, and a real-world hands-on approach to the subject matter allow students to explore the web as a creative outlet for both designers and developers. This course culminates with a simple website design project, wireframes and schematics, individual presentations, and a formal critique. Prerequisite: None

It is a study of how corporations raise and manage capital. Topics include modern financial principles, methods, policies, and institutions. It is to focus on corporate organization, creation and organization.  Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 410 Data Management System (4 Units)

Covers database concepts; relational and nonrelational database systems; database environment, theory, and applications; and design, development, and implementation of database systems. Students develop a practical database project utilizing a popular database development system and generate user interfaces and reports. Students also learn how to make persuasive technical arguments concerning common database tradeoffs that must be considered when choosing a database in a real-world project, and are instructed on how to effectively communicate technical matters orally.  Prerequisite: None

Provides a study of algorithms and their related data structures, including linear lists, linked lists, trees, graphs, sorting techniques, and dynamic storage allocation. Applications are implemented using an appropriate computer language.  Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 420 Data Analysis (4 Units)

Covers the essential exploratory techniques for summarizing data. These techniques are typically applied before formal modeling commences and can help inform the development of more complex statistical models. Students will learn exploratory techniques for eliminating or sharpening potential hypotheses about the world that can be addressed by the data.  Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 510 Emerging Technologies (4 Units)

Covers concepts of emerging technologies and trends in information technology such as Big Data, Mobile devices, Wearable devices, Android, iOS, Mobile Communications, IoT, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LP-WAN, Cloud Computing, AR (Augmented Reality), etc. The course includes projects on Big Data using IBM SPSS Statistics, AR applications, Cloud Computing using AWS (Amazon Web Service) EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud), and Smartphone applications to analyze mobile communication, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth networks.  Prerequisite: None

 

MGMT 308 Principles of Management (4 Units)

This course is a survey of the five basic functions included in the practice of management. Management in organizations’ theories, techniques, and concepts will be presented. The role of the manager in a technologically-oriented society will also be discussed.  Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 610 Data Security and Disaster Recovery (4 Units)

This course examines real-world applications of database security and auditing models. These concepts are integrated with planning, organizing and implementing disaster recovery procedures as applied to business data systems.  Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 615 Fundamental of Information Security (4 Units)

Introduces the principles and practices of information security including security models, internal and external security threats, and attacks. Topics include cryptography, network, mobile, host, applications, data, access control, and operational security.  Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 625 Enterprise Security (4 Units)

The course provides an in-depth presentation of security issues in computer systems, networks, and applications. Formal security models are presented and illustrated on operating system security aspects, more specifically memory protection, access control and authentication, file system security, backup and recovery management, intrusion and virus protection mechanisms. Discussion of importance and implementation of the business continuity plan, disaster recovery plan, risk assessment to business.  Prerequisite: None

 

STAT 1230 Introduction to Statistics (4 Units)

Presents standard topics in introductory statistics for students whose major is not mathematics. Topics include descriptive statistic, probability distributions, estimations, hypothesis testing, linear regression, correlation, and other topics. Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 910 IT Project Management (4 Units)

Provides a foundational and practical knowledge of project management principles. Identifies tools and processes for managing projects using both Waterfall and Agile methodologies.  Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 960 Field Education (4 Units)

This course is an educationally-directed practicum through which students are expected to progress in their professional development. This course is focused on important principles of Christian business leadership with an appropriate field experience under the supervision of a competent supervisor. Cognitive, effective, and experiential learning experiences are designed to foster the student’s formation in business field and community service. Prerequisite: CIS 910

 

CIS 999 Final Project (4 Units)

As a primary goal, students implement a major team-based software product based on their own software documentation and planning from the previous semester. As a secondary goal, student study and practice software engineering concepts, principles, and methodologies as relevant to the implementation phase of software engineering. Students are also instructed on how to prepare and present a technical demo aimed to “sell” their product. Prerequisite: CIS 960

ACC 103 Managerial Accounting (4 Units)

This course is an overview of the use of financial accounting and cost accounting data for the design and preparation of reports to aid management in organizing, directing, controlling, and decision-making functions. The topics include the fundamentals of cost accounting, budgeting and responsibility accounting for cost and profit centers.  Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 220 Java Programming (4 Units)

This course is designed for beginning programmers with limited experience that will advance their knowledge of Java to an intermediate level. In this course students will learn how to use the basics of Java, to create simple and efficient Java applications. This course will enhance the student’s Object-Oriented Programming skills, as well as control statements, data types, and other essential skills needed to create simple to moderate Java applications. Prerequisite: CIS 210

 

CIS 270 Enterprise Applications Development (4 Units)

Provides traditional analysis, design, programming, testing, and integration for enterprise applications spanning a variety of platforms and technologies. This program portfolio of enterprise applications includes Financial, Learning Management, Research, and Student Systems. Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 350 Network Protocols and Routing (4 Units)

This course focuses on initial router configuration, router software management, routing protocol configuration, TCP/IP, and access control lists (ACLs). Emphasis will be on the fundamentals of router configuration, managing router software, routing protocol, and access lists. Upon completion, students should have an understanding of routers and their role in WANs, router configuration, routing protocols, TCP/IP, troubleshooting, and ACLs. Prerequisite: None

 

BUS 1299 Introduction to Christian Business (4 units)

An introductory study of the functional areas of business to help students realize the integral role business plays in the economy and our lifestyles. Topics include the major elements in the business environment, forms of business ownership, competition in the domestic and international market, management of human and financial resources, marketing, business technology and information management, accounting, and business and personal finance.  Prerequisite: None

 

BUS 2240 Business Law (4 units)

It is a study of fundamental principles of law applicable to business transactions. The course specifically relates to the areas of legal environment of business, contracts, and sales contracts.  Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 425 Statistic Implementation to Business (4 Units)

Introductory probability and statistics for both of IT and business students. Topics include descriptive statistics, probability, expectations, binomial, normal, sampling distributions, one and two sample estimation and testing. Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 430 Customer Relationship Management (4 Units)

This course examines customer relationship management (CRM) and its application in marketing, sales, and service. Companies strive to use CRM to optimize the identification, acquisition, growth and retention of desired customers to gain competitive advantage and maximize profit. Students interested in working with customers and CRM technology and would like to be responsible for the development of any major aspect of CRM will find this course beneficial. Emphasis is given on both conceptual knowledge and hands-on learning using a leading CRM software. Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 460 Big Data (4 Units)

Students will gain an understanding of what insights big data can provide through hands-on experience with the tools and systems used by big data scientists and engineers without having previous programming experience. Students will be guided through the basics of using data analysis applications and will experience how one can perform predictive modeling and leverage graph analytics to model problems. This course will prepare students to ask the right questions about data, communicate effectively with data scientists, and do the basic exploration of large, complex datasets. Prerequisite: None

 

MKTG 1290 Social Media Marketing (4 Units)

This course gives a foundation to the practical business applications of social media in a marketing world. Through Facebook, Linkedin, blogs, YouTube, Pinterest and other platforms, students discover that social media is for more than just making friends and that there are now only a few degrees of separation globally. Students learn that social media is about marketing at the right time, place and with the right message for existing as well as prospective customers with both legal and ethical behaviors.  Prerequisite: None

 

MGMT 1431 Production and Service Operations (4 Units)
This course provides a survey of the different types of services provided by organizations. Topics include similarities and differences between the production of services and production of products, the wide variety of services produced, proportion of organizations’ offerings that are services, and accountability and quality of services.  Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 520 Introduction to E-Commerce (4 Units)
This course will examine the evolution of data communications as a tool for commercial transactions. The history of networks and the Internet in transacting business will be reviewed. The marketing, financial and technical components of the e-commerce market will be examined so that students will be familiar with the motivations and operations of this rapidly growing worldwide marketplace. E-commerce will be analyzed as the primary facilitator in the globalization of the world economy. The technical aspects of planning, developing and implementing e-commerce websites and electronic transfers of business transactions will be studied. The costs and benefits of typical E-commerce technical platforms using Windows and Linux (LAMP) web servers will be analyzed. Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 620 Accreditation and Certification (4 Units)
This course gives in-depth focus for Information Assurance from an INFOSEC, US defense/military, perspective. Information systems security from an INFOSEC perspective focuses on protection of information systems against unauthorized access to or modification of information, whether in storage, processing or transit, and against the denial of service to authorized users, including those measures necessary to detect, document, and counter such threats. Emphasis is upon defining the IA priorities, baseline and current snapshot posture for an organization; and establish and manage an IA defense-in-depth strategy. Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 650 IT Audit (4 Units)

This course introduces students to the essential concepts of IT auditing. Students will learn standards and guidelines for performing an IT audit. Topics will include concepts of internal controls. Students will learn to plan and manage an audit as well as how to report on evidence collected during the audit. Prerequisite: None

 

ECON 140 International Economics (4 Units)

Students will apply what they have learned in previous economics courses to analyze the global economic environment. They will learn and apply the law of comparative advantage to understand how all people can gain from international trade. Trade agreements, such as GATT and NAFTA, will be discussed and analyzed. Students will learn about the currency markets and the different types of monetary systems.  Prerequisite: None

 

LEDR 121 Conflict Negotiation (4 Units)

Effective conflict resolution, bargaining and negotiation are addressed in this course as methods for improving the organizational effectiveness in the long term. A special focus will be placed upon creation of win-win solutions to real life organizational situations. Conflict will be examined as both a necessary and challenging workplace phenomena.  Prerequisite: None

 

MGMT 420 Foundations of Entrepreneurship (4 Units)

A study of entrepreneurship with particular reference to creating and starting a new venture. Emphasis on historical development of entrepreneurship, risk taking and entrepreneurship, innovation and marketing the plan, financial plan, organizational plan, going public, and legal issues for the entrepreneur.  Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 925 Qualitative Data Analysis (4 Units)

This course will introduce students to the characteristics and various approaches to designing and conducting qualitative research projects in information technology services research. Students will gain hands-on experience in various qualitative methods and analysis techniques while carrying out a research project related to their area of interest.

 

MGMT 430 Operations Management (4 Units)

This course is a survey of the fundamental concepts of production and operations management. The course covers the use of quantitative methods and statistical techniques for forecasting, resource allocation, decision theory, capacity planning, project management, inventory management, and quality assurance.  Prerequisite: None

 

MGMT 450 Strategic Management (4 Units)

A study of strategic management that focuses on integrating management, marketing, finance/accounting, production/operations, services, research and development, and information systems functions to achieve organizational success. The aim is to apply integrative analysis, practical application, and critical thinking to the conceptual foundation gained through previous study and personal experience. Emphasis is on developing an organizational vision and mission, developing and implementing strategic plans, and evaluating outcomes.  Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 515 Information Systems Analysis and Design (4 Units)

The analysis and logical design of business processes and management information systems focusing on the systems development life cycle; project management and cost-benefit analysis; techniques for gathering and analyzing information systems requirements; use of automated and non-automated techniques for logical system design.  Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 655 Digital Forensic and Investigation (4 Units)

The course covers both the principles and practice of digital forensics. Societal and legal impact of computer activity: computer crime, intellectual property, privacy issues, legal codes; risks, vulnerabilities, and countermeasures; methods and standards for extraction, preservation, and deposition of legal evidence in a court of law. Students will learn different aspects of digital evidence: ways to uncover illegal or illicit activities left on disk and recovering files from intentionally damaged media with computer forensics tools and techniques. Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 920 System Administration & IT Infrastructure Service (4 Units)

The course provides hands-on skill from working on a single computer to a whole fleet. Systems administration is the field of IT that’s responsible for maintaining reliable computers systems in a multi-user environment. In this course, students will learn about the infrastructure services that keep all organizations, big and small, up and running, and how to manage and configure servers, use industry tools to manage computers, user information, and user productivity. Students will also learn how to recover your organization’s IT infrastructure in the event of a disaster. Prerequisite: None

 

CIS 950 Information System Strategy, Management & Acquisition (4 Units)

Explores the acquisition, development, and implementation plans and policies to achieve efficient and effective information systems. Defines the high-level IS infrastructure and systems that support the operational, administrative and strategic needs of the organization. Prerequisite: None
